Los sustentos del café, el uso de suelo y las políticas de re-regulación en el centro de Veracruz, México

Heidi Hausermann & Mónica P. Hernández

During the 1990s coffee farmers’ livelihoods were transformed as a result of political-economic changes in the industry. Coffee farmers in Veracruz, Mexico were doubly impacted: they suffered from low coffee prices and the withdrawal of state subsidies. These changes inspired new livelihood strategies; this article documents such strategies in two central Veracruz communities. Moreover, through ethnography with coffee farmers and government officials, we show how the practices of producers and state authorities combined to produce new trajectories in state-led development and governance.
