2021 CLAG Honors – Call for Nominations
Please submit nominations for the 2021 CLAG Honors. These Honors are separate from the Student Field Study and Travel Awards and represent important recognition of the achievements of members of our scholarly community. The criteria and complete list of award winners are on the website, https://clagscholar.org/awards-funding/honors/, but the Honors descriptions and materials requested (in italics) are also below. The deadline for submission is Friday, October 15th to the Chair of the Awards Committee via email: dsalisbu@richmond.edu. The Awards Committee is made up of the Executive Committee of CLAG and will carefully consider complete nominations before selecting those most deserving of CLAG Honors. CLAG will formally recognize and celebrate the 2021 CLAG Honors recipients at the January 5th banquet of our upcoming CLAG 2022 Conference in Tucson, Arizona January 3-8, 2022.
CLAG Teaching Award (NEW!)
The CLAG Teaching Award is given in recognition of outstanding teaching (undergraduate or/and graduate) of the geography of Latin America. The award is not limited to any one course, engagement with all of Latin America, or any particular aspect of human or physical geography, but instead recognizes outstanding teaching that inspires and educates students about the geography of Latin America. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include syllabi (maximum 2), assignments (maximum 2), teaching evaluations, peer evaluations, and other indicators that capture teaching excellence.
Ascendente Award (NEW!)
The Ascendente Award is given in recognition of an early career scholar/educator (<8 years since PhD date) demonstrating outstanding early accomplishment in the scholarship, teaching, and engagement of/with the geography of Latin America. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include a one-page statement(s), CV, and other indicators of outstanding and impactful scholarship, teaching, and/or engagement.
Carl O. Sauer Distinguished Scholarship Award
The Carl O. Sauer Distinguished Scholarship Award is given in recognition for a corpus of important published work or other significant contribution towards Latin American geography. Recipients will be scholars who are leading authorities in specific research topics and geographic areas of Latin America. Recipients could also be scholars whose research has made significant advancements towards fostering understanding of Latin America to a broader audience. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include a one-page statement(s), CV, and other indicators of outstanding and impactful contributions.
Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award
The Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award is given in recognition of a life-time achievement towards the understanding of the geography of Latin America. Recipients will have strong career-long research contributions that build on the solid foundations of academic Latin American geography, or that have impacts beyond academia in the forms of policy implications and/or education to a broader audience. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include a one-page statement(s), CV, and other indicators of outstanding and impactful research and other achievements.
The Enlaces Award is given in recognition of contributions to improving relationships between geographers and geography departments throughout Latin America. Recipients will have demonstrated success and commitment towards this goal. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include a one-page statement(s), CV, and other indicators of collaboration across departments in Latin America.
The Public Engagement Award is given to an individual in recognition of contributions to enhancing and disseminating knowledge of the geography of Latin America to civil society, the private sector, or government. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include a one-page statement(s), CV, and other indicators of impactful engagement with civil society, the private sector, and/or government.
The Outstanding Service to CLAG award is given in recognition of significant contributions to the improved functioning, broadened outreach, or enhanced impact of CLAG. Materials submitted on behalf of nominees could include a one-page statement(s) and other indicators of service to CLAG.
