Four Countries Recognize George Lovell
The four countries of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica have bestowed an Award of Public Recognition to Dr. W. George Lovell, lifetime CLAG member and recipient of the 1995 Carl O. Sauer Distinguished Scholarship Award and the 2018 Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award from CLAG.
Notice of the award from the newsletter of Queen’s University’s Department of Geography reads:
Dr. George Lovell has received an Award of Public Recognition for his research, teaching, and publications on the history of Central America, an honour extended him jointly by the Academies of Geography and History of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. The award by the four learned societies singles out George’s long-standing commitment to generating and disseminating knowledge about Central America, especially its experiences of conquest and how the region fared under Spanish colonial rule.
Bestowing this award, the citation reads, coincides with the 500th anniversary of wars of conquest in Central America.
Receiving such recognition simultaneously from four different Central American countries is a rare and noteworthy occurrence.
